For hunting, there’s nothing a .410 can do that the 28-gauge can’t do better. Some view the .410 as a gun for kids, an inconsistent crippler, and difficult to use on flying game. loads for the .410. You can calculate the diameter of shot sizes by subtracting the shot-size number from 17 and then divide that by 100. When I used a 410 for squirrels I used #6 shot in 2 1/2" chamberd shotgun. I would not use steel #6 on squirrels regardless of gauge but especially not the .410. If I had to absolutely shoot steel shot at squirrels it would be #4 or #3 steel. Many shooters shot squirrels or rabbits with a .410 when they were a kid. The small bore 28 gauge is probably best used with shot no larger than #6, and I can see no point to using shot larger than #7-1/2 in .410 bore guns. Great shot size with exception to small birds close range. I used #6 shot as close as I could get which was usually 15 yards. For the last three years I have hunted with the .410 the most, just a little Stoeger O/U .410, and I have to tell you with 3″ #6 shot it is lights out awesome, (both barrels full choke). Was considering using 7 1/2 shot this year. Gotta tell you man, I have squirrel hunted my whole life, .22LR, 20 gauge, 16 gauge, 12 gauge, and .410. When I was a teenager, one time I was grouse hunting and shot at a squirrel with lead #7 1/2 shot from a full choke 16 gauge at around 40 yards. This load will kill them as well as any 3 inch shell at the range you should shoot squirrels with a .410 I know someone has killed squirrels at long range with the .410 and may take exception to this but get them as close as possible and then get 5 yards closer. I am with 007 on this answer, only I use the 14" barrel. I am unfamiliar with available 410 shells today but when i was a kid (in the dark ages) I used my mother's H&R single shot, full choke 2.5" 410 for squirrels and porcupines. #5's are a very over looked shot the fills the bill for probably 90% of a shotgun users needs in the field. Hence, 17-8 = 9, or .09”. Though there are smaller shot sizes on the market, #8 is the smallest shot commonly used by hunters. I use a 3" shell with size 6 shot.
